Brief
Professional Practice
This module gives you the opportunity to
investigate different possibilities in terms of how your career and practice
will develop after University. In
particular it aims to enable you to develop an understanding of the
professional context/s you might be interested in entering and gives you ‘real
world’ experience which will help inform your future development.
You will be supported through talks, lectures,
workshops and tutorials as you move through this process and offered practical
advice and guidance when approaching organisations or individuals outside the
University.
The module has two assessed components:
Experiential Placement (70%
of the final mark)
This element requires
you to identify and organise experience within a professional Art &
Design context. The experience must be for a minimum of 30 hours and the
context/s you choose should be appropriate to your future career aspirations.
With this in mind they
could be:
·
Within an institution, eg a company,
gallery, school, arts team, museum, health setting, design agency.
·
With an individual freelance
designer/artist/project manager/photographer or other creative practitioner.
You can choose to
undertake experience in one, or a combination of different contexts
For assessment
you will need to submit the following elements :
1.
Record of Process : A blog of your
experience.
This should
record the whole process of researching, organising and gaining your
experience. This should be illustrated throughout and completed ‘in the
moment’.
Collaborative Project (30%
of the final mark)
This element requires
you to work with a group of your peers to develop a collaborative project outside
of the university. This should be appropriate to your practice but this element
gives you an opportunity to try something you might not ordinarily consider and
develop working relationships with students who you may not have had contact
with before.
It can take any form
(which might include) a publication, web-based project, arts and health
workshop, exhibition, intervention, public artwork, education project. You will
receive a group mark for this element so successful collaboration and teamwork
is the key to success.
For assessment
you will need to :
1.
Present the Project
Verbally and
visually present your project to L5 students and staff at the end of module
presentation day.
You need to
think about how you present as a group as all members should participate
actively. Bear this in mind as you move through the project as you will need to
document what you do. Previous presentations have included simple power-points,
short films, product demonstrations.
Be inventive, your
mark will come entirely from this final presentation
Important Note
Agreement forms need to be signed before you begin your placement.

Dear Lynsey,
My names Maisie Wilkins and I am interested in applying for a work placement at your events company Le Keux. I am currently studying Level 5 BA Hons Art and Design at Birmingham City University and I am now looking as to what careers are available to me when I finish my degree.
I have become interested in event management as although I enjoy being creative I have learnt through recent experiences I work well as someone who needs to make decisions and knows what steps must be made in order for a task to be completed.
I came across your company online and was instantly impressed, your unique party events such as Cocktail Mixology Workshops and Vintage Massage really grabbed my attention as they are something I would love to experience myself. I also love the 50’s American Diner theme as it makes everything so fun and vibrant. I would be immensely grateful to have the opportunity to work within such an energetic and stylish event company as yours.

Hello Maisie,
Thank you for your email. We're pretty snowed under at the moment with preparations for the upcoming festival, but we do occassionally take people on short term work placements. If you'd like to get in touch after the festival with a bit more information (eg a CV, details of your availability, length of placement you're looking for etc) I'll be able to look at whether we have anything suitable then.In the meantime, we may be able to put you on the reserve list for volunteering at the festival if that's of interest? We're fully subscribed at the moment, but sometimes places become available. I've copied in Sarah, our volunteer coordinator, so do let her know if it's of interest. Festival dates are 20 - 30 March.
Kind regards,
Selina HewlettOperations Manager

My names Maisie Wilkins and I am interested in applying for a work placement at The Birmingham Repertory Theatre. I am currently studying Level 5 BA Hons Art and Design at Birmingham City University and I am now looking as to what careers are available to me when I finish my degree.
I have become interested in the creative side of theatre and event management therefore I am looking for work placement that would involve set design or helping with the planning of events at The REP. I have recently created my own fantasy city and started refurbishing furniture therefore have gained many skills which can benefit me in this industry.
I have always enjoyed my visits to The REP as I would go every year with my family to watch the Christmas productions, a favourite of mine has always been The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe which was performed amazingly as well as had a stunning set and costumes, another favourite was The Little Shop Of Horrors. The theatre has always been a love of mine and it would be an honour to experience working behind the stage.

Hello Maisie – thanks for getting in touch.
Unfortunately, we don’t have any placement opportunities available at the moment – we get many such requests and we cannot accommodate everybody. Our departments here are very specialised and we already work in partnership with a number of different colleges to offer placements to students studying Theatre Design etc.
BCU runs courses in Theatre, Performance and Event Design. If you are really interested in this type of work, could I suggest that you speak to one of the staff there? You can find out more about the course on the BCU website.

Dear Maisie,
Thank you for your recent email expressing an interest in our work experience scheme here at Birmingham Hippodrome.
Unfortunately, Birmingham Hippodrome is a presenting theatre and therefore we do not have any design or construction departments for set, costumes or props. We present touring productions that arrived at the theatre ready to go on stage and therefore we do not have any vacancies in this field
Regarding our general work experience scheme we are a very popular choice for work experience and we are inundated with letters and emails such as yours. Consequently, we are now fully booked for 2014 and have already booked placements for 2015.
Thank you for your interest in Birmingham Hippodrome and I wish you every success in finding a suitable placement.

Request for a Job Placement
Thank you for approaching The NEC Group to request a job placement. Being the region’s leader in Conference, Exhibitions and Arenas events, with a world class catering operation, as you can imagine we are often people’s first choice when they look to experience an exciting place to work.
Whilst providing a number of 1 week placements for our 3 supported schools, we do not at present have a work experience programme for University or college students. It is an area we are continuing to review but are unlikely to offer a scheme in the foreseeable future.
We are therefore unable to assist with your enquiry.
Yours sincerely

John Charles Interiors
Dear Jenna ,
My names Maisie Wilkins and I am interested in applying for a work placement with your interior design company. I am currently studying Level 5 BA Hons Art and Design at Birmingham City University and I am now looking as to what careers are available to me when I finish my degree.
For a group project I have been refurbishing furniture, as a consequence it has made me consider a career in interior design, I love being creative as well as making imperative decisions in order to improve things. Throughout all my work I constantly find myself going back to textile based work without consciously thinking about it such as making curtains, designing a lamp and incorporating sewing into my work. I would like to now advance my skills to a more professional level.
I came across your design company online where I was attracted to the banner of photo’s at the top of the website especially the beautiful bathrooms and the way you understand that they are just as important as the other rooms in the house, that they are a haven where most people have the only time to themselves. I also admired the cool kitchens which were modern yet still homely, I particularly like the cream kitchen with a black counter top with in built stove, the room has such a bright inviting atmosphere. It would be an honour to experience working within such an established company as John Charles Interiors.

I arrived and greeted Mel who works in the store, we talked for a while about how Mel got into Interior Design as she studied Fine Art at University, she gave me loads of advice on how to get into it too if that was the career I chose. I then spent the afternoon looking through all the fabric books so I could have more of an idea of what they sold which would help me better with the customers.
Wednesday 09/04/14
I arrived and Mel and me and a cup of tea before we started working on a scheme for a customer, I was asked to find blue wallpaper that would match the customers kitchen Mel explained the woman was fancy and glitzy so look for these kind of designs. I spent the majority of the day finding wallpapers and fabrics that would work well together. We also had a customer come in who was looking for wallpaper for a bedroom, she was really attracted to a few vibrant yellow ones, we spent a lot of time looking through to see what would work well as the customer had a specific vision of what she wanted. She took 3 of the wallpapers home so she could see what the they would look like in the room.
Thursday 10/04/14
I spent a lot of this day ordering samples for customers so they could see the wallpapers and fabrics they liked in the rooms they wanted them so they could get a better idea if they would work. I would call the companies up, give them our account number and then the references of the materials the customer would like, we was able to get them delivered straight to the customer. The customer from Wednesday about the yellow wallpaper came back today to return the wallpapers she took home, she ordered 3 rolls of the yellow textured wallpaper for the bedroom.
Friday 11/04/14
Today we worked on a scheme for a woman who wanted to turn a small room she had into a cosy, warm, hut like room. We looked for fabrics that we could use to make curtains and upholster a seat, I then ordered these samples to be delivered to her home.
These was a scheme for the womans small room that she wanted to change, we really wanted to use a cross hatch material and mix dark and light colours to break everything up.
This was a scheme for a woman's kitchen, it wasn't exactly what she asked for but we felt these colours would look beautiful in her kitchen.
This was another scheme for the woman's kitchen, we added crystals the blind material to make it more glamorous, we went for a very elegant look with this scheme.
Overall, I was really pleased with my experience, I got to help a lot with customers schemes and was able to add my own input and opinions. However, I was surprised how much admin work Mel did, she spent a lot of time on the computer organizing things instead of working hands on. When I mentioned this to Mel she explained that most people think she spends her time working with the fabrics and making schemes but she actually works more with the technical side of the business as this was also a main aspect of being an interior designer. I don't feel like I a job in Interior Design is going to be for me however, I think I may use aspects of it in my work.
Another section of this project was the collaborative group project, my group has created a company called ReNew which specializes in up cycling furniture and running workshops to teach the public how they could up cycle their own furniture. I was involved with up cycling furniture we had found as well as contacting people about our company, I am also involved in setting up and running the workshops.
